Money matters



As we work towards creating communities where victims of domestic violence can not only survive but thrive, it is important to not minimize the role of money.

Domestic violence happens in every social and economic status. We often think that it happens more in poor families but I think the more affluent are able to hide it more because they do not use traditional social services as much so they are not included in the stats. Victims working or living in high profile areas may not come forward because of a fear of losing status but poor people may have no choices for where to go. Each can be devastating.

Leaving a relationship or separating a household always has financial implications that sometimes has long lasting consequences. Mortgages cannot be undone when you are through with a relationship. Jobs are lost due to harassment. Bank accounts are emptied when passwords…
