What does it mean for parents, friends, professionals to advocate?

Well, the word when broken down means to give voice to and at its best advocacy gives voice to unforeseen needs, concerns, issues.

Experientially advocacy seems to be frequently received as hassling, but that is not the intention. For sure advocacy occurs when a conflict is experienced. Conflicts of

Needs
Expectations
Wants
Understanding of roles

When I advocate, what I hope for is that the educator and I can work together with the student to find a mutually satisfying resolution for the challenge. ______________ is the goal. How can all of us work together to get there?

So I come to you, teacher, counselor, administrator, not for you to bear all the weight, but to give voice to the learning need and to see how we can find work arounds to the challenges. You know your goals and systems better…
